Best Seller  Spring Favorite

Red Roselle Sorrel (Hibiscus sabdariffa) is a warm-season hibiscus treasured for its deep red calyces and tart, cranberry-like flavor. Known simply as sorrel throughout much of the Caribbean, it is a culturally important plant used for traditional drinks, teas, preserves, and more.

Key Features

Produces deep red, fleshy calyces

Tart, cranberry-like flavor

Traditional Caribbean favorite

Beautiful ornamental and edible plant, leaves as well

Excellent candidate for greenhouse and protected growing

Everyday & Traditional Uses

The red calyces are traditionally used to make Caribbean sorrel drink, often prepared with warming spices such as ginger, cloves, and cinnamon. They can also be used for tea, syrups, jams, jellies, sauces, and other preserves. Young leaves can be used as a tart leafy green in various dishes.

Fall & Greenhouse Growing

Roselle is a warm-season tropical plant and is not frost tolerant. Because flowering and calyx production occur later in the season, a greenhouse or other warm protected environment can help extend the growing period as Georgia temperatures begin to fall. Adequate warmth and light are important for continued growth and production.

Quick Growing Tips

Provide full sun, plenty of warmth, fertile well-draining soil, and consistent moisture. Roselle can become a substantial plant, so provide adequate growing space even when growing under cover.
